Composting

On-Campus Composting

Joining our Composting Route

We pickup waste containers between the hours of 3 and 6pm, and drop off empty buckets at the same time. If needed, we can collect multiple days a week, and are willing to give you as many buckets as needed. Please note that the more buckets we give you, the more structured our pickup schedule must be in order to make sure we have enough students to collect your waste.

We offer several sizes of buckets: 5, 8, 15 and 20 gallons. You can select any size, as long as you only add preconsumer waste.

You can join our pickup route by contacting Will Tanaka at wtanaka@ucsd.edu.

Zero-Waste Events

If you want to host an event with food-waste pickup, contact Enid Partika at epartika@ucsd.edu to schedule a drop-off of buckets and waste pickup.

Food Scrap Drop-Off Program

Community Composting

RCG’s compost piles are open to anyone in the public to dump their food waste. If you do decide to dump waste in our compost files, you need to bury the waste in either one of our two outer compost bins in order to discourage animals from digging in our waste.

Currently, RCG accepts all green waste including meat, bones, dairy, bamboo or wood utensils and small amounts of biodegradable plastic (corn plastic). If you do plan on adding corn plastic, please let Will know as we need to control the balance of materials going into the compost.
